Thoughts On Easter
What a weekend! It’s about as dramatic a 3 days as you’ll find on the calendar. To be killed and then to rise up from the dead. Now there’s a Story For The Ages.
And so we celebrate this man’s life. Easter. “Eastre is believed to be an ancient word for spring”. How perfect. The awakening of all life. The climax to this man’s incredible existence. He raises Lazarus from the dead and then somehow figures out how to then do it for himself as well. Pretty amazing.
“Jesus Christ Superstar” was a hit Broadway musical of the 70s. It was a rock opera written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. At the very end of the opera, Jesus dies on the cross. As the curtain came down I sat aghast in the theater incredulous at the missed moment. As people stood cheering, I sat stunned. During the bows of the company I wanted to stand up and shout to them, “Hey, did you ever hear about Easter?” They left off the happy ending in a Broadway musical! Duh.
For the first 16 years of his life, I used to love watching my son, Dustin, search for the eggs and chocolate bunnies. We’d hide them in the plants, in the drawers, in his shoes in the closet. Sometimes I’d forget about one of the hiding places and 8 months later find those moldy little eggs waiting, rotting in their forgotten darkness. He’s 23 now and I think if I called him up this Sunday and invited him over for the hunt, he’d rush right over. But this is not a day for Easter bunnies. Christmas is not really about Santa Claus. And Thanksgiving goes a bit beyond eating.
It’s Easter! And I am going to once more review in my mind the story and wonder at its implications to this life on Planet Earth. He said, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.” Whoa. Think of the possibilities. As we used to say in the 70s, “Far out!”
Today I fly from NYC to LA in 5.5 hours. Certainly one of man’s great works, but probably not one he was referring to. His thoughts were more on healing, on peace, on love, on resurrection. I have contemplated this resurrection since childhood and, hopefully, passed it on to my son, the chocolate egg hunter. Years ago I wrote him a song to remind him of the day’s true meaning. I shall share it with you on this Easter occasion.
Who rolled the stone away
Was it 12 men looking for their master
Was it 11 lost souls wond’ring what came after
Who rolled the stone away
Was it 10 soldiers with a change of heart
Was it 9 Pharisees wrong from the start
Who rolled the stone away
Impossible
Impossible
Only three days ago
He was hanging from the cross
Everything was lost
And the sky cried rivers
And the mountains moaned
And a grieving people
Mourned a man disowned
And sorrow was everywhere
And everywhere
Their cries filled the air
Who rolled the stone away
Was it 8 thieves just robbing the grave
Was it 7 old ghosts who lived in the cave
Was it 6 demons with Satan’s rope
Was it 5 lepers with one last hope
Who rolled the stone away
Impossible
Impossible
Yesterday he was gone
And now everything has changed
Everything is strange
What was darkness
Now is light
What was ashes
Now takes flight
And his spirit is everywhere
And everywhere
Joy fills the air
Who rolled the stone away
Was it 4 winds wild and adrift
Was it 3 kings with one last gift
Was it Mary and Joseph longing for their son
Was it Judas himself
Wond’ring “What have I done?”
It could have been
No man the world has ever known
It must have been God’s messenger
Who rolled the stone
Who rolled the stone
Who rolled the stone
Who rolled the stone
Tell me now
Who rolled the stone
Could it be…
Who rolled the stone
Is it true
Who rolled the stone
Have you seen my savior?
