Is Anybody Listening? — A Few Thoughts #2

Dear Friend,

I’m back.

A wise fundraising expert said to me the other day, “Handle the thought out there that you are a for-profit company and not a non-profit.  People may not be so generous to a for-profit company.”

This one’s easy.  The recorded music business is no longer a for-profit business in case you haven’t been watching.  Music is now basically free to many generations.  But we have survived this crash because we have stayed nimble and gone into digital sheet music, website design and social media management. The sale of recorded music is now only 10% of our business at best.

But the creation of recorded music is our passion.  It is what we live for.  And we know that it is what attracts our tribe to us.  Simply put, we inspire others through our music. Our music is always at the root of all our endeavors.

So clearly, this part of our business model is a not-for-profit division.  We operate it at a loss.

If you wonder why, consider that a single song after nearly 70 years still sells for 99 cents (when you actually can sell it).  In the 50s a 45rpm record sold for a dollar.  I haven’t had a raise in 70 years. :o)

The bottom line here is this.  Support the arts!  Whether for-profit or non-profit.  We’re not over here doin’ gangsta rap.  We create Inspirational Music.

Thanks for listening,
