Is Anybody Listening? — A Few Thoughts #4

Dear Friend,

It’s me again.

In my previous short letter to you, I talked about Julia’s tours of the U.S.  Though spiritually successful and entertainingly popular, for us they didn’t really work the way we had hoped.  They were tough going. Tough because the venues were churches and not concert halls, produced on the ground by enthusiastic amateurs, but with poor sound systems, no lighting and virtually no stages.

At one point we had over a hundred interested parties dedicated to the idea of producing a Julia Wade Concert.  Only 23 of them actually worked out.  Most dropped sadly away when they realized that had not the funds to produce the concert.  Air transportation, hotel, per diems, ground transportation, sound system rental, local promotion – yikes!  Not to mention her fees for doing the concerts – fees that she kept reducing in order to enable.

Julia’s just not a back yard BBQ type act.  And I’ve produced shows at Lincoln Center and worked as a composer on Broadway for 20 years.  Doing these church concerts was simply very tough on us.  And yet she did it because it is her passion.

Finally I had to stay home and mind the store while she produced and starred in her own concerts and I knew that we had to come up with a better model.

And so we did …

Here’s the project in more detail: “Is Anybody Listening?”

Please keep listening.  I’m enjoying the conversation. :o)
